Each University staffer is tasked to do the following:

  • Pitch in article ideas
  • Write at least one article for the monthly issue
  • Cover events on and off campus
  • Conduct interviews and surveys as needed
  • Transcribe interviews and analyze survey data as needed
  • Converse with students, professors, and administrators regarding University issues

All applicants must have the following qualities:

  • Observant, with a good eye for ideas
  • Able to adjust to different situations
  • Capable of quick thinking
  • Creative
  • Social media savvy
  • Can work well with others

Menagerie

If you’re thinking of applying, here’s a quick checklist to help you decide! Applicants must have:

  • Skills in writing, of course
  • A good eye for stories
  • Creativity and versatility
  • Confidence to conduct interviews
  • Capability to work well with others

Menagerie writers are tasked to do the following:

  • Pitch ideas during monthly storyboards
  • Write monthly articles for both online and print
  • Cover all kinds of events, which range from conventions to business competitions and advocacy launchings
  • Work with co-writers and assigned photographers and artists

Sports

Sports staffers get to witness the glory of our athletes firsthand. Each staffer:

  • Pitches article ideas during monthly storyboards
  • Covers games and sports events
  • Utilizes social media to document and report events
  • Interacts with athletes, coaches, and admin for interviews

All applicants must have the following qualities:

  • Observant, with a good eye for ideas
  • Able to adjust to different situations
  • Capable of quick thinking
  • Creative
  • Social media savvy
  • Can work well with others

Photographer

The LaSallian photographers are there where and when it all happens. Each TLS photographer is expected to do the following:

  • Submit photos for the print issue
  • Cover events in and out of campus
  • Edit their own photos for submission
  • Write captions for events
  • Interact with people inside and outside of the organization

To join, applicants must be:

  • Familiar with camera settings
  • Equipped with a keen eye, confidence, dedication, and time
  • Able to conceptualize photos in the most creative way possible
  • Take quality photos
  • Familiar with basic post-processing techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Willing to write captions
  • Open to learn more and grow more

Layout Staff

Every month, staffers from The LaSallian's Layout section do the following:

  • Take content created by the other sections and lays them all out for print
  • Submit quality assignments on time
  • Coordinate with their partners
  • Design the readers’ experience of reading the print paper

To join, applicants must be:

  • Have good time management skills
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Be open to suggestions and criticism
  • An eye for design

Art & Graphics Staff

Artists from The LaSallian are tasks to do the following:

  • Submit work on time and in the best quality possible
  • Build better stories with their partner writers
  • Attend meetings and pitch ideas
  • Edit their own artworks according to the publication’s needs
  • Learn about different topics before making art and graphics for them.

If you’re interested and are…

  • Interested in drawing or making graphics
  • Open to suggestions and criticisms to improve your craft
  • Capable of working under pressure and yielding quality output
  • Witty and funny
  • Familiar with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Paint tool SAI, and/or Manga Studio
  • Flexible
  • Willing to commit

Web Staff

Contrary to popular belief, coding skills are not a hard requirement to be a member of The LaSallian's Web Staff. A web staffer must, however, have the following:

  • Management skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • An enthusiasm to push the boundaries of our online platforms

Despite being The LaSallian's smallest section thus far, the Web Section is responsible for all of these:

  • Managing the TLS social media accounts
  • Planning online content
  • Tracking and analyzing social media and web performance, and preparing monthly reports on it
  • Initiating and producing social media and web specials
  • Managing the TLS website, including its accounts, posts, and security
  • Continuously improving the website

Take the TLS entrance exam.

All applicants must take the TLS Entrance Exam on either the morning (0800-1200) or afternoon (1300-1700) sessions of June 2, Saturday at L332 or and June 4, Monday at L228.

Applicants are encouraged to bring their laptops for their recruitment exam. Applicants for the Art & Graphics section are required to bring a pencil and a few sheets of bond paper.

The last step of the application process is to be interviewed by your potential Section Editor and the Editor in Chief at the TLS office, Student Media House, 5th Floor Br. Connon Hall.
